Audi continue son cavalier seul. Tandis que Johnny Herbert part pour son 4e relais en tête de la course, les ennuis s'accumulent dans le peloton. Ainsi, la Dome n°9 du Kondo Racing qui évoluait en 15e position a dû regagner son stand pour procéder à un changement de boîte de vitesse.
En GTS, la Chrysler n°51 du team Larbre Competition a été rentrée pour changer l'embrayage, puis le démarreur, tandis que la Chrysler n°53 du team Carsport Holland a passé un certain temps dans son stand pour réparer la roue avant gauche qui a déchappé après une crevaison. Les sorties de piste et passages dans les bac à gravier s'enchaînent à l'image de la Roc n°28, la Riley & Scott n°4 et la Porsche n°85. Probablement agacé d'avoir dû s'arrêter pour un stop&go, Tom Kristensen est reparti le couteau entre les dents. Le Danois tourne en 3'35 pour tenter de rattraper l'Audi n°2.
Comme prévu, Audi domine et truste aisément les premières places à l'issue de la 3e heure de course. En effet, en dehors de la MG n°26 qui s'intercale à la 3e place, les R8 occupent les 5 premiers rangs. A noter le bel effort de la Courage n°13 qui pointe en 7e place, après un début de course sans soucis, juste en embuscade derrière la Dallara Judd n°14 du team Oreca.
La Ferrari n°58 du team Prodrive ne baisse pas de rythme et tient toujours la tête de la catégorie GTS. Mieux que ça, la belle rouge pointe maintenant à la 17e place du classement général, loin devant de nombreux protos.
En GT, la Porsche n°78 du PK Sport a repris l'ascendant sur la Porsche n°81 du Racer Group et domine maintenant la catégorie.
A signaler l'abandon de la Ferrari n°70 du team JMB Racing, ce qui porte à trois le nombre de voitures officiellement retirées de la compétition.

While Johnny Herbert takes off for his 4th stint at the head of the race, problems abound for the rest of the pack. The #9 Kondo Racing Dome, which had moved up to 15th place, had to retire to its pits for a gearbox change. In the GTS class, the #51 Larbre Competition Chrysler pitted to first replace a failing clutch, then the starter. The #53 Carsport Holland Chrysler spent quite a bit of time in its pits to fix a left front wheel which had come apart after a flat tire.
The off-track excursions continue one after the other, first with the #28 Roc, followed by the #4 Riley & Scott and the #85 Porsche.
Most likely fuelled by his stop and go penalty, Tom Kristensen rejoined the race in attack mode. The Dane lapped in 3:35 to try to catch the #2 Audi.
As expected, Audi is easily dominating the top positions in the race after three hours. Other than the #26 MG in 3rd place, the R8s occupy the top 5 positions. The #13 Courage is putting in a great performance, currently running 7th after a worrisome start and just behind the #14 Team Oreca Dallara Judd.
The #58 Prodrive Ferrari is keeping up its lightning pace and continues to lead the GTS class. The beautiful red car is now up to 17th place overall, well in front of many of the prototypes.
In GT, the #78 PK Sport Porsche has taken over the lead from the #81 Racers Group Porsche in dominating fashion.
The #70 JMB Racing Ferrari has now retired from the race, the third car thus far.
