Dans l'histoire des 24 Heures du Mans, la 6e heure est, en moyenne, la plus prolifique en abandons (deux en moyenne). En cette année 2002, la malédiction n'a pas frappé.

 

 

 

 

Deux Audi avec deux Italiens au volant ont entamé cette 6e heure de course en tête, mais sont déjà séparées par un tour. Installée en 3e position à seulement 1'30" de l'Audi n°2, la MG n°26 fait un tour en 3'38"187, ce qui lui permet de résister au retour de l'Audi n°3. Une belle performance, mais à l'issue de son ravitaillement, elle doit finalement céder sa place.

La Ferrari n°71 est victime d'une crevaison, alors qu'elle évolue en 47e position. Pendant ce temps, la Panoz n°11 est bloquée à son stand à cause d'une surchauffe moteur. La Courage Judd n°13 doit changer l'embrayage, la 9e place s'envole, car la voiture bleue devrait perdre plus d'une heure.

En revanche, les Courage Peugeot de Pescarolo Sport font une course sans histoire, la n°17 est 10e, la n° 18 roule en 14e position. Pour l'instant, Henri Pescarolo est satisfait : " Nous avons été épargnés par les ennuis, nous roulons à un rythme régulier, bref tout se passe bien. Je m'attendais à voir cette physionomie de course ".

21h20 sonne également l'heure du retour de Franck Biela au volant de l'Audi de tête, c'est son 2e relais, car c'est lui qui avait pris le départ. Chez Oreca, le Portugais Pedro Lamy est aux commandes de la n°15, il effectue son 1 er relais. Cet après-midi, il a participé à une course de V8 Stars en Allemagne.

Première apparition également de Rinaldo Capello. L'auteur de la pole position succède à Christian Pescatori sur l'Audi n°2, après 5h30 de course.

La Spyker (n°85) effectue une belle course. Mais alors qu'elle occupe le 38e rang, elle rentre au ralenti à son stand à cause d'une crevaison. Elle est imitée par la Porsche n°72 pilotée par Luc Alphand, qui est elle pour la 3e fois victime d'une crevaison. Gros problème pour l'Audi n°5 du Team Goh. Une fuite d'eau dans le système de refroidissement oblige l'équipe à changer le radiateur. Cela profite à l'Oreca n°14. Mais sa 6e place est menacée par la Bentley qui roule à seulement 2 secondes de la voiture pilotée par Stéphane Sarrazin.

Devant, les Audi occupent les trois premières places, dans l'ordre de leur numéro : la n°1 a 1 tour d'avance sur la n°2, qui devance la n°3 de 2 minutes. La MG n°26 est bien accrochée à sa 4e place (1re en LMP 675).

Pas de changements non plus dans les deux autres catégories, la Ferrari n°58 mène toujours en LM GTS, alors que la Porsche n°80 est en tête en LM GT.

 

The #5 Audi is siowed by a mechanical problem. In the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 6th hour is, on average, the most disastrous for the cars. In 2002, things were not so bieak.

Two Audis with two Italians behind the wheel have compieted the 6th hour of the race in the lead, but there's already one lap between them. In 3rd place, just 1 minute and 30 seconds behind the #2 Audi, was the #26 MG, and thanks to its impressive pace (a recently compieted quick lap of 3:38.187), it continued to increase the gap from the #3 Audi. A great performance, but one that was incapable of overcoming the time lost during a pit stop which allowed the Audi back into the final podium position.

The #71 Ferrari suffered a flat tire while in 47th place.
During this time, the #11 Panoz was stranded in the Os because of an overheating problem. The #13 Courage Judd needed the ciutch replaced, thereby losing its 9th place, as the work will retain the blue car for over an hour.

On the other hand, the Pescarolo Sport Courage Peugeot's have been running a ver), clean race, with the #17 car in 10th place, and the #18 car in 14th. For the moment, Henri Pescarolo is happy: " We've been lucky to have not had any problems and we're driving at a good pace, so everything's going well. This is how I was hoping that the race would go. "
Frank Biela took over the Iead Audi at 9:20pm for his 2nd stint, as he was already in the car for the start. The Portuguese Pedro Lamy is at the wheel of the #15 Oreca for his lst stint. This afternoon he took part in a " V8 Stars " race in Germany.

Rinaldo Capello finaily made his debut in the race. The winner of the pole position took over from Christian Pescatori in the #2 Audi, five and a half hours into the race.

The #85 Spyker has been having a solid race. While in 38th place, it was forced to pit because of a flat tire. The #72 Porsche in the hands of Luc Alphand suffered the same fate, the 3rd time the car has had tire trouble.

A big problem for the #5 Team Goh Audi. A water leak in the cooling system has forced the team to change the radiator.

The #14 Oreca immediately benefited from the team's problem. But its 6th place is in jeopardy, as the Bentley is only 2 seconds off of the car driven by Stéphane Sarrazin.

Up front, it's all Audi in the top three, in the following order: the #1 car has a one lap Iead over the #2, which in turn is 2 minutes ahead of the #3. The #26 MG is comfortably cruising in 4th place overall (1st in LMP 675).

No changes in the other two classes, the #58 Ferrari still Ieads the LM GTS class, while the #80 Porsche heads LM GT.
