Abandon |
Pegasus Racing, so close to the finishing line
Pegasus Racing had ups and downs all throughout the week of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. At the end, the drivers gave everything but the # 28 Morgan Nissan is not classified after a fire one hour and fifteen minutes before the chequered flag!
In the Top Fifteen at the practices
At the free practice held on Wednesday from 4pm to 8 pm, the three drivers drove in order to get used to a track which is not accessible the rest of the year. Léo Roussel was in charge of the set-up of the car and set the 17th time of the session. Then, Inès Taittinger and Rémy Striebig drove the car to perfect their knowledge of the track. At the end of this session, Inès went on improving her laptimes when she went out of the track at the Karting corner. The car went back to the pit and the mechanics did a fantastic job so that the car was ready to restart the second session.
After a two hour-break, Léo Roussel started to set the time to beat at the first qualifying session. Very quickly, he set a 3:42.449 and put the car in the 16th place in the LM P2 category. Then, the drivers went on taking turns.
The next day, before a storm prevented the teams from working and the drivers from improving their laptimes, Léo succeeded in going quicker and set a time of 3:41.285. The car ends in the 15th place of the LM P2 category. But, as Remy Striebig was not able to set the minimum required time during the different sessions because of several red flags and the rain, the car was slipped to the 56th place on the starting grid.
The start is given under safety car procedure because the track was too wet. After 50 minutes, the race finally started and Léo Roussel did a careful start. Everything went well until he was slowed down by a brake issue. The team quickly changed the brake pads which were brand new! After a double stint, Inès Taittinger and then Rèmy Striebig got behind the wheel. However, this latter spun and hit the wall at the Karting Corner. He went back to the pit: a front splitter and a hood had to be changed. Inès Taittinger replaced him but few hours later, she had the same misfortune and had to go back to the pits to change some body parts. The car is 22nd of the LM P2s.
The # 28 Morgan Nissan went on its way all throughout the night and was only stopped by the repairs of the plate that lights the number on the side of the car (9pm). The three drivers enchained the stints without any trouble on Sunday up to the 17th place. However, one hour and fifteen minutes before the end of the race, the car had a mechanical issue at the left rear and the Morgan went out of the track. Going back slowly to the pit, a fire started at the rear of the car. She stopped along the track so that the marshals could extinguish the fire. The car could not restart; the #28 Morgan was not classified…
The team is disappointed by the result and not finishing this race. However, the team showed its solidarity despite the issues. Now, the members of the team are going to focus on the next European Le Mans Series round, at Red Bull Ring, in Austria (July 17th).
What they said about the race:
Léo Roussel: "I am disappointed of course. One hour from the finish, that's disappointing. But that's motorsports; there are always plenty of surprises. We are all let down, that's all. The good thing is the solidarity of the team. Despite all the hiccups and technical problems we managed to have, the team is solid. I really want to thank the entire Pegasus Racing team."
Rémy Striebig: "Everything is good. I was able to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time. It's quite emotional for me. My dream has come true. But there is also great disappointment; we were so close to our goal, it would have been so great to cross the finish line. I enjoyed myself. This morning, I very much wanted to race harder but I held back because I so badly wanted to bring back the car and go to the end. What happened, happened, that's racing."
